Throughout the 2016 Presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton and other liberal-minded people kept saying that “love trumps hate.” It was a catchy slogan that played off the rival’s name and encapsulated the Democrats’ platform of tolerance and equality. Plus it made a great hashtag!
But then Trump won.
Since then, reports of hate crimes have been popping up all over the country.
The KKK is celebrating what they consider to be a victory.

And a misogynistic anti-Semitic bigot was given keys to the White House.
Even in my own family, a decades-old grudge is casting a dark shadow over Thanksgiving.
So… it kinda seems like hate is kicking love’s ass at the moment.
And it really fucking sucks.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, About why hate seems to be winning. I don’t claim to be a psychiatrist or a sociologist, but the best answer I can come up with is that hate is simply easier. If things aren’t going your way, it’s not easy to accept responsibility, look for a solution, and move on. It is extremely easy however to get angry at some external force, blame them, and focus all your rage in their direction.
It’s like when Luke asks Yoda if the dark side is stronger, and Yoda replies, “No. Quicker, easier, more seductive.”
And not only is it easy, but hate quickly begets more hate.
Because when someone hates you, the natural reaction is to hate them right back. Which leads to even more hatred, and the cycle just goes on and on.
So how does love win? I thought all you need is love. What happened to that?
I honestly don’t know. But I do think that the best thing I can do is to teach my kids about love. Let them know they’re loved. Show them that it’s important to love others. Teach them to be kind and generous and to give to others who are less fortunate. (Shameless plug: Nick’s Marathon is two weeks away!) If we do our jobs right, they will take those lessons into the world with them as they grow, and love will spread, and the hate that is winning the battle now will ultimately lose the war.
I hope so anyway. Because I really hate all this damn hate.
