Are you one of those people who set their clocks ahead so you won’t be late?
It occurs to me that people who set their clocks ahead so they won’t be late are going to be late irregardless. You’re late because you overslept and because you took too long getting ready and because you had to run back inside to set the DVR to record The Simpsons. The clock being wrong isn’t going to have any significant impact one way or the other.
See, I’m not known for my punctuality – I admit that. But I still hate it when the clock is set seven minutes fast, so I have to panic even more when I see the clock, when I first think that I am 45 minutes late, when in actual fact I am a mere 37 minutes late.
But then, maybe that’s the whole point of setting the clock ahead – you are happy when you realize that you’re not *as* late as the clock is saying you are.
Or maybe that’s the real point of setting the clock to the wrong time – to reinforce your already held belief that clocks are unscrupulous liars that can not be trusted.
But whatever the reason behind it is, has the clock being set into the future ever actually helped anyone be somewhere on time? Seriously, have you ever said, “Wow, I would have been super late to Grandpa’s 100th birthday party, but thanks to the fact that my clock is always set 12 minutes ahead, I’m right on time!”
I doubt it, but if there anyone can prove me wrong, I’d love to hear how.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackYour use of the word irregardless confused me because it seemed that regardless would just as well. Anyway, check out what Wikipedia has to say about it
I stand by my word choice, irregardless of what Wikipedia says.
As long as Uri brought up the ‘irregardless’ thing, I’m going to address the math side.
“…clock is set seven minutes fast, so I have to panic even more when I see the clock, when I first think that I am 45 minutes late, when in actual fact I am a mere 37 minutes late.”
I’m pretty sure Wikipedia would agree with me that 45 – 37 = 8.
Oh, and by the way, I totally agree with your anti-asking-a-clock-to-lie-to-you position.
