I’ve been kicking around the idea of getting a netbook, but I really don’t know that much about them. Does anyone out there know of any good ones, or brands to avoid, or features I should definitely look for, etc? I mainly just want something that can run a few basic programs, be cheap, light, and not have the battery die after 15 minutes.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackGet one with an N470 processor, which extends battery life from about 5-6 hours to 8-10 hours w/6cell battery. 6cell battery will make it a bit heavier and usually sticks out in some dimension but doubles the battery life compared to 3cell. I got the Acer AO532h netbook from Costco for $300 (in store only). Costco also carries an HP one which is $350 but has a 3cell battery. I don’t think the brand is terribly significant at this point and they all mostly have the same keyboard and features. If you wait a few months, then there is a new chipset coming out which will add HDMI out so you can connect them to a TV, something that can’t be done with the current models.
Thanks, Uri!
An HDMI output would be nice – do you know specifically when that new chipset will be out? You must have some inside info!
Actually, what about this one? It doesn’t have the processor you mentioned, but it’s got HDMI output and a 6 cell battery and pretty good reviews on Amazon.
Oh no! Now everyone knows my true identity! Anyway, the chipset was supposed to be out in the first quarter but I haven’t seen anything based on it yet. I would guess in the next 2-3 months or by Christmas at the latest.
That other netbook that you mentioned as a higher end processor. Should be faster and is 40% more expensive (also bigger/heavier) but has worse battery life (~5hr instead of ~9hr). If that tradeoff sounds good to you, then go for it.
