I kind of feel like there wasn’t a ton to digest in last night’s episode of Lost – it seemed to function more in the set-up role for what’s to come. A few fast observations:

  • Claire referred to her father and her friend – to me, this implies that Smokey and Christian are different people.  Maybe Smokey recruited him?
  • When Claire gets ready to “axe” you something, be worried.
  • And why does Claire insist someone took her baby?  From our point of view at least, she seemed to abandon Aaron.
  • On the wheel at the lighthouse, Kate has a number – 51, and number 108 was a crossed-out “Wallace.”  Is this Wallace person a new important character that will be coming to the Island?  If s/he is so significant, why is the name crossed out?  Or did that number not matter, and it was just important to get Jack to see the mirrors and then smash them?
  • And why is Jack so impatient, anyway?  Wouldn’t he at least be curious to see what the mirror showed at other people’s names?
  • How are these candidates determined, and who is selected/elected the winner?  Is there some sort of primary system in play?  Will Hurley and Jack become political rivals?
  • I don’t think that Jack’s original timeline ex-wife Sarah can be David’s mother – she was involved int he car accident that killed Shannon’s father, and that was only a few years before Oceanic 815 crashed.  So in any timeline, Jack is destined to have a failed marriage.  Or at least one, anyway.
  • It’s kind of cool how in the sideways world, our characters keep bumping into people they have crossed paths with on the Island.  But the reveals of people slowly turning around are getting somewhat forced and silly-feeling.  I understand what they’re getting at, and the pairings are still interesting, I just wish they were executed a little better.
  • And why is each and every promo promising tons of answers?  We know answers are coming, and we also know they’ll likely come slowly before the season really kicks into high gear.

Oh, and hey, my mirror theory from last week got some more play – Jack looks into the mirror and sees his appendectomy scar and struggles to remember the surgery.  And on the Island, Jacob apparently uses actual mirrors to watch people off-the-Island!  So, um, my theory is that, mirrors are important, and the windows to the soul, and to memories the characters don’t know they have.  Or something like that.  Totally rock solid theory.
