Everyone who watches The Office knows about “That’s what she said” – it’s only the funniest catch phrase around right now. If you don’t know it, here’s the quick explanation: Someone says something that could be construed as an innuendo, and Michael Scott jumps in by saying “That’s what she said.” Get it? Good.
So the other night while out for a delicious BBQ dinner with my family, somehow this expression came up in conversation. Courtney and I explained it to my mom, who for some reason doesn’t watch The Office. Anyway, some time passed, and Chuck commented how tasty his sausage was. (To clarify, he was referring to the BBQ sausage he had ordered, which was in fact rather good.)
Upon hearing this, my well-intentioned mother decided to use this new knowledge to try to make a funny, so she blurted out:
“She said that too.”
Courtney and I looked at each other, not having the faintest clue what she meant, until we figured out what she was trying to say.
“That’s what she said” – you’ve been officially Mom-ified. And I do hereby decree that henceforth, “She said that too” is the new “hip” way to make the joke. Hip to the seven people who read this blog, anyway.

It was also a funny joke when it was on King of the Hill 10 years ago.
Which, “That’s what she said” or “She said that too?”
If memory serves, didn’t TWSS start – or at least become popular – in Wayne’s World? Then it was funny that Michael Scott would make such an out-of-date pop culture reference.
I like how in (I believe) Season 5 Michael Scott stumbled to Oscar, “that’s what HE said…get it? Cause…gay?”
It works on so many levels, and like Al said, the joke was dated when The Office premiered, and they made it hip again and kept it going strong for five seasons and counting. But to keep it going even longer, I think Al’s mom will have to guest star at some point in Season 6. Maybe as the new regional manager?
Speaking of dated jokes…
If you’re into comedic torture (and what Office fan isn’t), I’ve been playing around with a sort of ’set’ of jokes that I think can be a lot of fun, and excruciating for the people around you, making it even more fun.
It’s hard to explain, so I’ll just give you a scenario with three examples. We’ll take the family bbq Al was talking about as our setting:
While the sausages are cooking and you’re just hanging out on the summer night, you say, “hot enough for you?”
Then someone takes all the food out to prepare, and let’s say there’s one of those big family-sized bottles of ketchup. You say, “would you look at all that ketchup!”
Then once the sausages are cooked you look around to see who cleaned their plate/finished theirs the fastest and say, “didn’t like the sausages much, huh?”
You could really have fun with this ’style,’ but you may be the only one laughing. And that’s okay, because there’s really nothing wrong with having some fun all by yourself (she said that too).
God, I miss you guys!
Mom is, and always was, COOL. Unfortunately, she does not come equipped with the sense of humor required of us fellow “Office” devotees.
Sorry, Mom.
