No, this isn’t about what pizza place has the best slice – everyone already knows that’s Ancona Pizzeria in Valley Stream.
I really truly ask everyone reading this to vote on this riddle, as your tally will finally settle a debate that’s been going on between Courtney and myself for far too long. Just go with your gut here, don’t second guess yourself!
Let’s say you have a slice of pizza, like so:

Now the person you’re dining with wants to split it with you, and they cut the slice of pizza like this:

Now you have two sections – one with the tip of the pizza (A), and one with the crust (B).
Then your companion asks you for the top piece.
Which piece of pizza, A or B, do you think would be “the top?”

I think I still go to the dentist in Valley Stream so I can stop by for a slice every 6 months.
The top is clearly (B) – the “half” with the crust – but the argument is null and void since this is an invalid way of splitting the pizza in the first place
I completely agree… that is the wrong (and not to mention unfair) way to split a piece of pizza.
However, ‘B’ is absolutely not the right answer. Given those choices, ‘A’ is the top. It has a point and points are always at the top… The Eiffel Tower… The Popes hat… A Christmas Tree. There is one major exception to this rule… ironically… a top. The bottom of a top is clearly the pointy part.
I do have to say that I have a problem with the premise of this question though. The top of a slice of pizza is where the toppings are (duh). The bottom is what gets burned if you leave it in the oven too long.
Sincerely,
Some Dude (Alan how i ended up on your site, I’m not quite sure. I hope all is well.)
Since I was the one who started this whole debate, let me defend my position. I agree with Steve. The top (if cutting the pizza this odd way) is clearly B.
My argument uses earth as a model. If the pizza was the globe, the inner core and thus bottom of the earth is clearly the center (where the point of the pizza slice reside). The outer crust of the pizza resembles earth’s surface which would of course be the top.
I think people who say A is the top are only thinking of the slice as an individual entity without remembering that the slice comes from a greater whole (the pizza)!
As a scientist, I of course had to research my argument. If one searches google images for pizza slice, there are a bunch of pictures that show up. About 90% of the the pictures are of a slice oriented with the crust at the top of the image. Again, this supports B as the top of the slice. Also, there is a cute pizza slice cartoon with a slice of pizza that has a face. In the cartoon, the eyes (and eyebrows) are up near the crust. Now, how can say that the point is the top? If people thought that, then the cartoon would have his eyes near the point.
It’s all well and good to debate this, but in the end we know which is right… B!
No one else is going to weigh in? We’re officially at a tie then, since I say ‘A’ is the top, mainly for the same reasons as Some Dude.
The Wife makes a good case in the “pizza as Earth” analogy, but when you’re dealing with a slice of pizza, it is totally fair and prudent to think of the slice as its own entity.
And if a pizza slice was a person and the crust was it’s head, it’d be so top-heavy it’d fall down instantly and never get up again.
So there.
ok–since i now see pics the top is the piece A–everyone knows that the crust is at the bottom of the pizza
there is no question the top is where the cheese and sauce are and the bottom is where the crust is. the question should be which is the front or back
looks like A is winning. hey even mom typed in.
