There’s talk about Long Island seceding and forming it’s own state.

Basically, a few Long Island politicians are angry at all the taxes paid to Albany, and the MTA payroll tax is the proverbial straw that’s breaking the camel’s back.

Do Long Islanders have a right to be upset? Sure. Is it really going to secede? I doubt it.

As this Newsday article points out, no state has formed from seceding an existing state since the Civil War. But the REALLY intriguing thing is, in my mind, what the new state would be called. The Newsday poll has the top suggestion being the totally uninspired “Long Island.” Yawn. Why not “Billy Joel Island” or “118 Miles of Strip Malls” or “But Daaaaaaaaaaddy, I Wanna Be My Own State!”
