Six months ago today, I got married.
Six months ago today, I turned 28 years old.
That’s right, I got married on my birthday. No, it wasn’t so I would remember our anniversary. (I happen to be quite good with dates, thank you very much. ) No, we wanted to get married at Cornell in the fall, and what better time than Fall Break, when the campus would be relatively empty? That Saturday just so happened to be October 6th, my birthday.
I’ve always been a fan of my birthday, and I was a little bummed that the day would never be JUST my birthday again, but my birthday AND my wedding anniversary. But, when it comes to your wedding day, you gotta do what you gotta do, and it seemed like a small sacrifice to make.
Throughout the day - the preparations, the cocktail hour, the ceremony - I got a few “Happy Birthday”s here and there, but they were largely lost amid the, “Why aren’t you in your tux yet?” and, “Has anyone seen the florist?” and, “Is everyone in the wedding party ready??” I was too busy too really notice or mind, however, and in the end it was a beautiful wedding.
But during the reception, just after the cake was cut, my beautiful bride took the microphone for an announcement. She told everyone that it was my birthday, and she had a special surprise for me. That’s when they brought it out - a beautiful birthday cake just for me with Super Mario and Princess Peach being joined in Holy Matrimony, with Daisy as Maid of Honor, Luigi as Best Man (naturally), and Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, Waluigi, a Blooper, and a Goomba all rounding out the party. You don’t find cakes like that just in your average bakery aisle; they have to be custom made, and that’s just what my wife did.
On her wedding day.
Arguably one of the busiest and most stressful days of a woman’s life is her wedding day, and on top of the hair, make-up, and everything else that had to be done that day, my bride was hot-gluing the little figurines she bought on ebay to look like a perfect little video game dream wedding.
It was the greatest birthday cake a Nintendo nerd like me could have asked for. As my wife led our guests in a singing of Happy Birthday, I couldn’t help but think,
“I have the coolest wife ever.”
Happy Six Month Anniversary!
